so, when should you actually bother with a message queue?

Hey everyone, I've been thinking a lot about message queues lately. They seem like a go-to for decoupling services and handling async tasks, but I'm curious about the thresholds. When does it feel *necessary* to introduce a message queue versus just a direct API call or a simpler background job? What's your trigger point?
