When does database connection pooling become a bottleneck?

im seeing some interesting latency spikes in our app lately and im trying to pinpoint the cause weve got a connection pool and its generally well sized but im wondering if anyone has experience with connection pools themselves becoming a performance bottleneck are there specific metrics you look at whats the common stuff to avoid when managing pool size or timeouts curious to hear your thoughts and any best practices you follow
