when to ditch synchronous API calls for async

hey everyone, been thinking a lot about how we handle inter-service communication. we tend to default to synchronous REST calls, but I'm starting to question if thats always the best approach. when do you all find it makes sense to switch to an asynchronous pattern, maybe using message queues or event streams, instead of waiting for a direct response? what are the trade-offs you consider?
